Questions

Is this the official Vermont business search?
No. Open State Index is independent of every state and federal agency. It explains Vermont records and sends you to the official search (Online Business Search), where the state answers it.
How do I check if a business name is available in Vermont?
Search the Online Business Search, then compare against the Secretary of State's business name rules: a name must be distinguishable in the records, and changes in punctuation, spacing or entity ending alone do not count. Names of businesses that are inactive expired, dissolved, withdrawn, canceled, merged or converted are not counted against a new name.
Does Vermont charge a franchise tax or a similar yearly tax?
Most pass-through business entities, such as LLCs taxed as partnerships and S corporations, file a Business Income Tax Return with the Department of Taxes and generally owe a minimum tax of $250, and C corporations also pay a minimum corporate income tax.
