About Massachusetts business records

Massachusetts is one of the most expensive states for LLCs: $500 to form and $500 every year for the annual report. Corporations pay $275 to form and $125 for a paper annual report ($100 online), and their good standing certificate costs $12 instead of the LLC's $25; neither is a tax good standing, which comes from the Department of Revenue.

The Secretary of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Corporations Division keeps these records; many people call its search CorpWeb.

Questions

Is this the official Massachusetts business search?
No. Open State Index is independent of every state and federal agency. It explains Massachusetts records and sends you to the official search (Corporate Database), where the state answers it.
What is CorpWeb?
CorpWeb is what many people call the Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth's online business records. The official search linked on this page, Corporate Database, is part of the same system.
How do I check if a business name is available in Massachusetts?
Search both the corporate database and the name reservation database for the proposed name. A name may not be the same as, or so similar as to be mistaken for, any existing entity or reserved name, and the Corporations Division makes the final call at filing.
